Grasshoppers are the insect high jump champions! The exceptional jumping ability of grasshoppers is due to their extremely long and powerful hind legs. They can jump 20 times the length of their bodies. This would be the equivalent of a human jumping one third the length of a football field (30 meters).
But such comparisons are illogical because muscular capability does not increase in direct ratio to increased size and weight. Consider this: a grasshopper has around two hundred more muscles than a human being does; also, a grasshopper has thicker muscles. And these muscles work better because of the way they are attached to the exoskeleton. Also, insects carry less weight on their body for their size than humans do. Obviously, grasshoppers were designed to be extremely high jumpers.
